Hey guys I was running my motor this weeknd and have run into the problme of it dropping a cylinder during acceleration it will bog for a bit then work it's way out but once you try to go full WOT it bogs and jerks and wants to go but cuts in and out. I had it going really well yesterday but today its acting up what should I look for? Or do to fix this

Check your coils and your ignition wires. Sounds like you have a broken wire

My motor doesn't have any coils it is one of those weird models made by OMC that runs off a distributer kind of from my understanding what wires should I look for ignition wise?

Re: 1969 Johnson 115 dropping a cylinder

ok well after inspecting the wires looks like one of them may be the reason for it seems to cut in and out every now and again when I shake the wire when its running, I called the dealership they said the wires don't exist anymore? so I would have to custom fit some new wires up to my motor, I am sure there has to be a better way around this? does anyone know any after market wiring companies that may make a kit? as well could the issue be inside the motor like the distributer or ? what else can I check?

The wires actually screw into the dist cap. I make my own by crimping on the wire ends and using solid core wire.
I just looked at the parts breakdown and did not see the wire ends as a seperate part, guess I will have to be careful with the ones I have left.
Make sure the wire is tight in the dist cap.
If you can see where the wire is shorting out you might be able to remove the spark plug boot, slip some shrink tube on it and help the problem.
You might want to remove the flywheel and check the cap and rotor also.

ok when I remove the flywheel, do I have to reset the timing etc or can I just take it off inspect the rotor and cap( what should I look for?) and then put it back together? thats my next step I wanted to do, but just wondering if it will affect anything?

Removing the flywheel will not affect your timing, remove the flywheel and inspect all the wires and see if any of them have rub markes on them. Look for cracks in the dist cap.

perfect ok great thanks alot, where is the timing on this motor? I don't mean to sound dumb but I haven't really messed with an outboard before

Re: 1969 Johnson 115 dropping a cylinder

so after looking at the motor and doing trial runs it seems to do this when the fuel in the gas tank begins to get lower im guessing the motor is starving for fuel and acts like it drops a cylinder under hard aceleration? is this a possibility? bc when leisurely cruising she acts just fine and fires up instantly etc

Try squeezing your primer bulb while under load and see if the problem goes away, maybe your fuel pump is about to go out.
