Re: 1969 johnson 85hp hydro shift probleme

ok to start off here hydro electric drive motors have a problem default.that iant really the best way to say it but best i can hink of right now.basicly if a hydro electric drive motor has a problem in shifting it automaticly goes to the default which is the forward gear. it will stay there until the problem is resolved regardless of what position it is in. the reasoning behind this is it enales you to get back to the boat ramp in case of a failure.if you are getting contenuity on all wires.( checked with a multi meter shows no breaks or shorts) then you may take a look at your shift lever and remote box to make sure there is no broken cable.may also check for the same thing at the motor.make sure that when lever at remote is move that there is movement coinciding with it at the motor.also check the selinoid.common for them to be the first thing to go bad on this system.not certain where it will be located on our size motor.another check is the clutch. turn the key on ( DO NOT START ) then go back to the prop and try to turn it by hand. do not try to force it.if i am thinking correctly it should click when turning the prop in a forward motion but will not turn if trying to spin it in a revrse moton. that is about all the knowledge i have of this type of drive hopefully someone with more experience will pop in and give you more info or perhaps correct any info that may be wrong o my post.im not an expert by any means.

Keep this in mind -- the motor has to be running for the lower unit to shift out of forward. Without the motor running, no matter where the gear selector is, it will be in forward.

If the oil has water in it, which is why it looks milky, it may not be capable of creating enough hydraulic pressure with the motor running to go into neutral or reverse.
