1969 Johnson 9.5 (or any 2 stroke) Ring Question

I'm rebuilding an old Johnson 9.5 and having trouble finding someone who has a feeler gauge and micrometer in Baton Rouge that will check the clearances and install the rings on my pistons so I can proceed with my rebuild. One guy I've talked to said that I don't have to worry about the ring gap on a 2 stroke when using OEM rings - just put them on "as is" with no grinding. Is this true?

Particularly on the smaller hp models, that is the case. Grinding will normally result in an error, $$$$$ down the drain!

Good call. I owe you big time - I was about to start grinding on these rings.

Even tho' they're OEM rings the gap should be checked in the cyl against specs before installing on the piston. The manufacture can sometimes screw up.
