Both the top and bottom portions of the housing in my Johnson 9.5 are significantly worn. I see that these parts are quite expensive. I've got my motor apart right now, but I can say that the water was spritzing out of the hole fine before I took it apart. Should I replace the top portion of the housing, the bottom portion of the housing, both, or neither?

Yes, otherwise it won't pump properly. Those grooves prevent the impeller from making a seal with the housing and drastically reduce the pump's output.

I just recently bot an OEM water pump kit for a Merc 15 for less than $50 on e-#@&. That includes everything - housing, impeller, pump base, etc.

I don't know if the kits are readily available for your motor, but it's a very good investment.

Darn it... I figured. It's hard to find the bottom portion of that housing. I wish someone came up with a non-pot metal part or some way to retrofit another housing on there.

I guess you edited your last post. The part you found was right - that seal would usually go under the plate - I believe.
In any case, the plate matches - you should be good.

Thanks, Rick. I did edit my last post. I believe the metal seal goes above the plate - a gasket goes below the plate (or at least that's how the parts pictures show it).

Now, another question: is there anything I can dip the housing in or put on it to hinder corrosion?

I don't have the diagram in front of me, but I thought I saw a round part just under the plate - I think it was called an oil seal? In any case, the impeller will fit right against the plate.

As far as coating, I don't know of anything. I don't think the housing & plate would wear very quickly if you're running in clean water.

I ran my 15 hp merc over onto a sand bar by accident. The sand/silt scored up the housing quite badly - totally my fault.

If you avoid the bottom, they should last a long time.

I haven't had to deal with that job.

Do a search on this forum, or on mercury outboards - I've seen something on this recently.

Thanks all. At this time, I don't care whether I break the bearing housing (I've ordered a new one) - I'm just worried about the lower unit housing. I screwed two bolts into the housing last night and tried to remove it by pulling with the claw of two hammers and with pliers. This thing is stuck good! There used to be posts on this topic, but the pictures were removed from the most informative post.(

Just an update. I squirted some PB blaster on it and let it sit overnight. The next morning, I used a 10 inch punch (you'll need at least an 8 inch punch to complete this job) to force the bearing housing out from the bottom. It popped out in one piece. If anyone is ever looking for the bottom housing (or any other rare pieces that can't be found on iboats), I would recommend going to aomci.org.

You asked about corrosion protection for the pump housing. I sprayed a 4HP water pump with chromate primer, since I was refinishing the whole motor. When I dropped the LU a few years and a lot of salt later, it was in great condition (it was brand new when sprayed). It took only a few seconds to do.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give this a shot!
