I took the carb apart, everything looked pretty clean. Put new gaskets/ orings etc in that came in the rebuild kit. I used compressed air and blew through the openings I saw (fuel to bowl, little hole on top of bowl lip that sounds like it goes to bottom of bowl, main jet (? long brass nozzle with 6 hole in it.....I'm familiar with Motorcraft car carbs, that's about it), but thing still won't go.

I shot gas straight into the intake and the thing fires up till that burns off so it's getting no fuel.

Does anyone have a pic of a carb with all fuel passeges marked/ arrows pointing at them? The bowl was full of gas, so it's somewhere between the bowl and intake. I'm thinking I have a clogged orafice somewhere. BEFORE I took the thing apart it would run with choke on but die with choke off.....

Thanks!

Did you remove the core plug on top of the carb and clean the tiny passages in there?

Don't think so. Where exactly is the "core plug"? There is a hollow pin that has a flat head screw slot that goes right down the middle of the float and screws into the carb body. It had 6 holes that were clear, and a cork gasket around the top which seemed to just be floating there. I replaced the gasket with the one from the rebuild kit, and it just sits around the top of the hollow pin with 6 holes.....

Also, the needle that attaches to the float.....it looked like the clip was just kinda floating on the metal tab between the float and float pin....is that right?

if you'll go to marineengine.com you can find diagrams of your carb....using model no. 6902M..#30 is the core plug..pop it out with an awl or small screwdriver sharpened..clean holes beneath it ( they enter the carb throat )..remove and inspect #37 low speed needle and also the packing that seals it < while all this is out, make sure this passage is clear back to the well that the core plug covers >..#24 is the high speed nozzle <careful with this thing as they get brittle with age, I'd suggest cleaning it in place, carefully> #38 is the gasket you asked about and has to be in place to seal the carb body from the float bowl..#15 is the main jet <orfice plug> all fuel used by the carb comes through this, it really needs to be removed and cleaned, however, if you don't have a screwdriver that fits it perfectly you can easily break off one of the ears ...if you have doubts, clean it in place with carb cleaner and smaller than jet orfice, copper wire < some will cringe reading that, but necessity often dictates less that desireable means >..the float setting is..with carb inverted the float should be parallel to the carb body < I've read from Joe Reeves that the float gauges actually have the float end opposite the hinged end , slightly higher and I've set them this way since reading his information>..so finally after this long winded reply..if you'll google.. Leeroy's Ramblings..outboard articles...he covers a 6 hp. maintenance with pics that may benefit you...one last thing...while at marineengine.com..carb and starter group..check out the price of starter components and handle that starter gently...

THANK YOU! That helps tremendously. I didn't take out the main jet (thought that was just a plug) nor did I take out the core plug. The low speed needle looks good, and I cleaned the high speed nozzle.

I'll take the thing back apart again this afternoon, clean those aread, and see what it does.

Took it back apart, cleaned out the high speed nozzle and it fired right off. Idles fine and runs like a champ. THANK YOU AITn for the help!
Question, I couldn't figure out how to take the core plug out. I drilled a hole in it, ran a screw down in it, and then pulled it out that way. Is there another way to do it? The rebuild kit I had came with a new plug, but I just wondered if there was a better way to get the old one out.....

Now I have to figure out how to get the starter back on.......

That is one way to do it. I normally use an awl that I punch into the middle of the plug and pop it out.

I run a self tapping screw in that plug & grab it with pliers. It doesn't take much pulling, it pops right out. Also, I use a deep-well socket to re-seat the new one. Lots cheaper than the special tool!
