I have a Chrysler 9.9hp with magneto / points ignition. It is twin cylinder with two coils. One of the coils is shot. The other is probably not far behind. I was told that there is a way of using new / different coils as the original ones are hard to come by.

Does anyone know if I have other options than changing to CDI or indeed if this is either possible or practical.

I am reasonably mechanically minded, and the engine is not a museum piece so making modifications is not a problem.

Thank you all..

DD, that really depends on where the coils are mounted. If they are mount to where a different type coil will fit, then it can be done. However, before I changed to something else, I would search for the original manufacture types first to see if even some used coils would work. JMHO!

I think the magneto coils (mounted under the flywheel) from 6Hp and up to maybe 20Hp will fit.
Have you checked for used ones at Ebay?
Have you checked the 185-2370 (replaces FK12369) at Maxrules?
Another option is Franz Marine.

Thanks for the info. They are under the flywheel. I would get NOS ones, and have located two for approx $50 each.
This evening I did a full test and strip down to discover the plug end of the HT lead was rusted away. The coil now tests fine!
There is plenty of slack HT lead so I will trim it and fit a new boot.
I plan to replace both HT leads in the winter as they are 50 years old. I will start a new thread to find out if they can be replaced as they seem molded into the coil.
