So, I just bought a 1969 PowerCat with twin Merc 1250's of the same year. I have no history with the boat as to when it was last used, etc., but hasn't been used for a number of years. It was apparently stored in a barn for much of its life...which is believable based on the condition. I did a bit of re-wiring to replace some corroded wires, cleaned a few grounds and checked leg oil. One motor started up and ran quite well, although I did not run for very long. The other motor has no spark on any plugs. So far I only have a Clymer manual but it is very lean on specific information. I disconnected the mercury switch...still no spark. Looking for some guidance on where to look next (switch box, coil, trigger, ??) and if there are any simple ways to diagnose those parts. Have a multi-meter but nothing else. Luckily I have a working motor to exchange parts, but would like to do it methodically if possible. Have good mechanical abilities (restore motorcycles) but my first venture into the boating world. I love the old stuff...looking forward to getting this ol' girl back on the water.....cosmetically she is shining up very well....original gel-coat. I know....will replace the impellers before heading out for any duration. Anything else to check?...was thinking about checking the torque on some of the bolts....gaskets often shrink from sitting.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Dave

I swapped out the coils today.....still no spark. I found a Mercury service manual on the web....will give that a read tonight but if anyone has experience please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Dave

Belt is in place and looks fine.....so down to the trigger? There are likely previous posts on how to test the trigger....does it need to be taken out or in place. I hope it does not disturb any timing settings to remove?
