i have a 1969 mercury 50 hp that works great except for the water coming out of the tell tale is very hot (i cant hold my hand under it). there hardly is any water coming out of the two exhaust ports behind the engine. i took apart the water jacket on the block and cleaned everything out but still no help. i dont know what to do, because it is coming out of the tell tale but not out of the exhaust.

I'd try blowing air up the water tube (you'll have to remove the lower unit for this) to see what kind of circulation you have. Or try connecting a water source to the copper water supply tube. If you can't get free flow thru the powerhead with either air or water, you may need to pull the powerhead to investigate.

The water tube's rubber grommet on the upper end may be squeezed shut, blocking water flow. The only way to gain access to fix this is to pull the powerhead then remove the exhaust adapter plate.

With the powerhead off, you can blow air thru it to see if any blockage remains.

You'll need a powerhead base gasket, exhaust plate-to-center-section gasket, and rubber grommet to do this job.
