I am wondering If I can put a 1971 85hp power head (model 857HC) on a 1989 85hp? Or can I use the electronic tilt/trim on the 1971 unit? The 2 motors look extreamly similar besides the electronics. Thanks in advance.

Physically, the 69 block will fit. The problem is the ignition. If you are intending to use the original distributor ignition, there is no problem. However, the ignition switch needs to be rewired. Two "M" terminals are not used and blue wire connects to "I". White wire is tach signal.

I suspect that you will be dissatisfied with the performance of the '69 block though. Even though it is rated at 85, it is not going to put out that much horsepower. Old school--small ports--three rings instead of two--two caged needle bearings in each piston (more resistance)--block may not be "packed" for better volumetric efficiency--less efficient inter-cylinder seals on crankshaft. The 85 was probably a theroretical paper figure based on mathematical formula calculations of bore, stroke, RPM, and compression. You will also want to change the head--newer heads cool better.

If you want to use the newer Force ignition, you will need to modify the top of the block to receive the alternator carrier. That involves drilling (5) 1/4 X 20 holes and adding a spacer to retain and locate the top crankshaft ball bearing. You also need to be certain that the seal is properly located in the carrier and on the crankshaft because the old block is about 1/16 to 1/8 inch higher here. There is no change needed for the newer tower though.

If the block is apart and in pieces, you can enlarge and square the ports. This will gain significant horsepower--enough to make it deliver a true 85 at the prop. If you want to see an example of porting, go to The Chrysler Crew, join, go to photos, go to Frank's boats.

I forgot to tell you: the trim/tilt unit should bolt right up. Just be aware that the lower 5/8 stainless bar can be a real bear to get out (it goes through both clamps and the trim cylinder housing plus the lower shock and tilt cylinder holes. It tends to corrode in nice and tight. You may end up using the engine mounting clamps and tilt/trim as an assembly. Simple though--one 3/4 nut holds the clamp bolt and two nuts hold the upper tilt/trim bar. That's another one that can be fun to get out.

Re: 1969 power head to 1989

Well I was out last night and my 71 decided to gernade 2 pistons = /. My overheat alarm decided to not work and the the head gasket looks like it was leaking in 2 cylinders and over heated them so now it's time for a rebuild. I have a couple questions about parts.

1. is this the correct head gasket for my 71 85hp?

2. Are these the correct pistons I need? I know chrysler used 3 rings instead of 2 on these older motors and I want to get by with replaceing the 2 pistons and boring the 2 cylinders. does it matter running 2 pistons with 2 rings and 1 with 3?
