I bought a old mptor that a lot of the wires are breaking. I bought the boat at an estate sell for $90. I bought the seats and they through everything else in. I Got the motor running, I had to redo about 5 strands of wire because the wire casing was brittle and craking off. When I dropped the lower unit to replace the impeler (Spelling bad) I disconnect the electronic shift wires as outlined in the book. I lowered it down and while feeding the wires throw the waterpump housing the wire broke in two pieces. It is so brittle that I can rub the wire and the coating flacks off. I would love to buy a complete set of wires to replace them all but I cannot find any. My question is, if I splice and replace the bad part of the wire.... How doe I keep the connect from getting wet.... Do they make a product that will seal it? I have seen liquid electrical tape and other tape that claims it is waterproof. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Re: 1970 115 HP Johnson

The wires from the rectifer whas shot and the hot was broke in two. Not sure if the motor was in salt water or some kind of cleaner, or something that harmed the wires.

I noticed the previous owner replaced some wires comming from the plus pack up to the terminal Board (Major area of wire damage.)

THe shift wires run from the motor through a hole in the rear inter housing running down to the impeler. It is about half way down that the wire harnass became very brittle and broke. So if chemicals were used.... it would have drained down. Also when you touch the outer cover over the wires..... Your hand turns really black.

Thanks Ken:confused:

so the whole cable broke? There two shift wires are enclosed in a cable. If the cable is shot but the wires are good you probably could repair it. post a pic??

I've repaired the wire and made it waterproof. I found out that the Exhaust Seal Between the Lower and Upper unit... THis is how the are recieved all the oily residue. Question, I read your other post and I noticed that you had a question about the exhaust relief. Does or is the water suppose to pour out this hole like other motors? It looks like it is designed to go out the bottom of the motor? since you have one that is rng I thought you could tell me. I bought a Service Manual and I think I might have to buy a different manual to supplement this one... For example, this book say noting about replacing the impeler.

no water does not poor out these holes. Hard to describe what it looks like. Water kinda spits out of it. When in idle it spits little drops of water, when in gear it spits out faster.

Found a great place in Houston that claims to have just about every part you will every need for any Johnson or Evinrude. I find their link and post.
I bought the exhaust gasket and the waterpump O-ring today. They explain that on this motor the water comes out under the fin. He told me if I had to have piece of mind I could pull the thermostat and then water would come out.... However he would not recommend that.
