I can't get this engine to tilt, unless I lift up on the engine slightly,to relieve the weight and remove the pin,by sliding it out from under the two claws that hold the engine in place while in gear.(kinda' hard to do when on the water),,I am thinking that there should be a rod in the back of the top cowl, where you pull up from, but there isn't one,Am I missing something here? it seems like a simple thing, but is not explained in the fsm,and it got dark on me tonight before I could really get a good look at it. Other than that she runs like she should.

Re: 1970 115 manual tilt question.

Hello,
Sorry to be bringing this post back to life but i just got a '72 1150 merc and I had the same problem. Once we lowered the motor to use it I could not raise the motor back up. I had to get out and take the pin out and then raise the motor up.
It wasnt explained to well above but the gear shifter must be in forward to release the locking claws from the trim pin? Then the motor will come up freely? So when I am coming into port I must turn the engine off while in forward to pull the motor up before it hits bottom?
Thanks

Pat, Most engines are not designed to intentionally hit bottom while running. Yes I think you should turn the key off in forward with enough momemtum to hit the beach, and pull it up before you hit.

Re: 1970 115 manual tilt question.

I took the boat out yesterday and it ran pretty good. I did find out that it has to be in forward to disengage the hooks.
I also found out that it chokes out if you put it in forward unless you give it full throttle and then it stays running and you can go. If you push it forward slowly it will stall out. Something needs to be adjusted. Thanks for the help.
