Currently running an 18 on my boat but I have a line on an inherited 1970 25 hp. Just wondering if that model has any gremlins I should know about before I attempt a resurrection. Thanks!

Are you looking a gift Horse in the mouth? As far as issues, that little motor is 48 years old for God's sake.

In it's day that was a darn good motor. I worked on a lot of them.

check the compression. if thats good, everything else is pretty doable. great little engine and if you already have the 18, the 25 is the same engine but hopped up from the factory. only a few parts not interchangeable.

Not run in a while, but that’s the story on every old motor I have picked up. Thanks for the help. New Motor Monday it is.

as with any motor that is almost 50 years old

change impeller
change gear lube
go thru fuel system
go thru ignition system
check compression

For 100 bucks I couldn’t pass it up. Finally got to it tonight and after a little tlc to the carb, got it to fire. Somebody took care of it. Did notice some line in the prop so I still have some work to do. So far so good. Thanks

How old is the 18 you are replacing? My only complaint on the 1970 models is they do not idle as well as the pre-1968-ish models because of the emissions plumbing. If you are running an older 18, you probably will notice it. If not, well you have nothing to compare it with so may not notice.

Picked up a 25 hp parts motor at antique motor meet.------Good block / crank / rods / carburetor / fuel pump.---$ 20 and did not hesitate.

My 18 is an FD19, believe that is a 65, runs well, but the cowl and seal are pretty grim and it rattles a ton. I plan to compare the two and see which one fits better with my boat. Neither of them cost much except my effort and that just keeps me out of trouble so i may end up keeping both...

The 18 and 25 were both good engines. Normal maintenance stuff and they'll run forever.

Have you tried some split vacuum line on your 18 cowl? That fixed my 7.5.

Split vacuum line, eh? Worth a try...somebody tried to hold the old gasket in place with caulking, kind of just a mess now.

Auto parts stores sell the Vac line and weatherstrip glue. Worked great for me. Looks original.

I’ll give it a try. Gotta be better than what I have going on now. Thanks
