Re: 1970 4 hp evinrude, carb rebuilt ?
Hi JoeJoe,
Start by setting both needles gently closed (fully clockwise). Back the low speed (upper) out about 1 1/4 turns, and the high speed (bottom) about 1 turn. They generally will screw inwards a little bit from there to fine tune it.
If you still need to rebuild the carb, start by getting the carb out of there - I think you have to remove the cam follower to get the portside nut out. You also have to back the needle valves all the way out to clear the cowling. Flip the carb over and remove the screws that hold the bowl in place. If it's gummed up, the bowl is usually the prime suspect. Take the float out, noting which way it was installed. Remove the float needle and check for gum/varnish residue in there. Use compressed air and a good carb cleaner solvent if you've got it available. If you've bought the carb kit, install any new gaskets included, including the one that goes around the central standpipe. Reinstall the float & needle and check the float height - should be dead on level with the face of the carb body when the carb is held upside down. Reverse the rest of the procedures and get back to us with how it worked out!
- Scott
