Hey all,
I'm new to the forums and chasing some info... I have a 14' 1966 Starcraft that I'm putting a 1970 Johnson 40hp on. I'm having a few problems with getting the motor to mount correctly onto the transom, when it seems that I have the clamping screws tightened fully the mount will still rock on the transom. Should I put some transom wedges in between the mount and the transom? Should I have a block of wood between the top of the transom and the motor mount to help hold the motor at the correct height?
Also I need to find a set of controls for this motor and I'm not having much luck, does anyone know of a good source for these parts? I need one preferably with a key start and electric choke. If none is available then I'll probably just wire a dash panel with the appropriate switches etc.

thanks heaps!!

-=-Dave-=-

Doesn't that motor have lower bolt holes? If it does, you need to put some bolts through to hold it on. I don't believe that motor was meant to be mounted by the clamps alone.

For controls, check e-bay and the boat salvage yards (do yahoo or google on "marine salvage")

I got these

used 197? control box, cables and wire harness from Blackbird O/B Rebuilders Give them a call and have your cable length available because they will ask for it to match the control up properly.

Howdy, Corncob.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I wonder about your transom. How thick is it? How tall it is (vertically)? Could your boat be a light duty model with a 15" transom only rated for 15 or 20hp? Confirm the HP rating or that 40 just might tear your transom right off.

I had a light duty 14' semivee in the late 60s that was only rated for 14hp. A very flimsy boat.

Assuming that the boat is rated for the 40 and that your shaft length matches the transom, you can find almost any outboard parts made since 1909 at Twin City Outboard. Try their website.

Good luck. :)

Thanks guys!!
I don't remeber there being bolt holes on it, I'll check that when I get home...
The rating plate on the boat says it's rated to 45hp, so it should be OK with the 40 on it.

-=-Dave-=-
