I am having issues with reverse, or lack of. Forward and neutral seem fine, when you go into reverse, it just grinds. I have no idea how to adjust it. I see where the cables go and i can see that mechanism move, but don't know where to adjust. PLEASE HELP

Welcome aboard.

Couple of questions first, Have you made any changes or worked on the motor? And when you shift to reverse, are you doing a sharp, quick pull on the control handle? You don't ease it into gear, either forward or reverse. Easing will grind.

Under the cowl, where the cables enter, is a clamp arrangement. The cable goes through an adjustable barrel. If you said no to the questions above, the barrel may need adjusted for equal movement of the cable to the linkage, in both directions.

Thank you very much for you help. I have had the boat for 8 years and have never had reverse, It is something I would like to try to fix. The motor is more reliable than new ones and I am trying to fix it up. I currently use trolling motor in tied docking situation. So, I have rebuilt carbs and replaced fuel lines and a few other things in lower unit, but never had tried to get in reverse. Didn't know what to do.
I don't believe I put it into reverse, sharply. I have tried slowly before, so maybe that is why it grinds. Boat is a 1970 as is the motor and its a great motor. I like older stuff. Lol.
I will try to see the barrel mechanism needs adjustment. Do you just rotate the barrel to adjust?

You can check the current adjustment by putting the remote in reverse. You'll either have to have the engine running, or (with the engine OFF and spark plug wires pulled) have someone turn the prop while you're shifting.

If the shift arm is not all the way to the back of the slotted rail that it rides on, you're probably not far enough back for full reverse engagement.

And Yes, you disconnect the linkage that holds the shift cable's barrel adjuster and turn the barrel one way or the other to make your adjustment. Ideally, you want the cable pushing into full Reverse with just a bit of pressure. But you have to check your Neutral and Fwd positions after doing so, to make sure they're still in adjustment.

Note that with reverse gear grinding for that long, likely the shift clutch and cogs on reverse gear are damaged. You'd either need to dismantle the L/U, pulling the bearing carrier/reverse gear assy and the propshaft/clutch assy, and replacing any worn/damaged parts. Also you'd want to take a hard look at the shift cam and plunger, and renew those if there's any wear.

It might be simpler and cheaper to find a 50hp parts motor on your local Craigslist. There's a number of them on mine (Seattle) right now, for $100 or less. It'd cost you more than that to buy all the parts required, and the special gearcase tool to remove the gearcase threaded "nut" which has to come off before pulling the bearing carrier.

If your motor was used in fresh-water only, you'd have a pretty good chance of the L/U coming apart easily. But if you have a Salty-Dog, I wouldn't mess with it. Just get a good used L/U and away you go!

Maybe Good Fortune will shine on you and the adjustment will fix the problem, if not, Craigslist (or eBay if you're fortunate enough to find a deal on a L/U) is the answer!

Just purchased a motor, controls and plastic tank for 200. The guy told me that the starter cracked. Haven't gotten into it completely, but it is looking like the tank fitting is broken and he did mention to me that when he was trying to start it that the prop was rotating. Gonna look into further but it may end up beng my good motor and my current may end up being the parts motor. My original motor is a 1970 50 hp Merc. The one I purchased is a 1971 50 hp Merc. Old one is red label and new one is blue label. From what I have been able to determine, the parts are interchangable. Is that correct?
