Hey guys, so I recently picked up a hobby boat for my first boat, just a small 15 ft 1970 fiberglass and I am trying to get the motor running. The model number of the motor is 60073B. I have already set the points, checked the plugs, it has good compression and the fuel is for another time. It has plenty of battery power to turn the flywheel at good speed and when I checked the coil, the secondary winding was reading at .04 ohms while the primary wasn't reading at all, could this mean that my coil is bad or is my power pack bad too. The battery is a starting battery with 1000 mca and its brand new

Cranking speed has nothing to do with making the spark on that motor.----Checked the rotor ?----Distributor cap ?---Likely the " amplifier " or CD module is bad.----Most of the time a new coil is suggested when replacing the amplifier.

the rotor and distributor cap are both new as well as the stator, when i tested the ignition coil it read at no ohms on the primary but .04 ohms on the secondary, is there a way to test the amplifier other than the light test

Ignition coil is the cheaper item to try next.----You will get spark after everything is new.

Yeah, I just don't want to spend a ton on this because I am on a very tight budget

Simple question then.----Why did you spring for a new rotor and cap ?-----Expensive parts if new at dealer or on special from E-bay or Amazon ?----Rotor and cap are quite durable.-----Your location ?

Disconnect and unbolt the coil and unscrew the wire from the distributor cap. Remount the coil, reconnect the primary wire,, and rig up a spark gap off the end of the spark wire. Disconnect the wire that goes between the amplifier and distributor. Turn on the ignition switch. Now, lightly brush the disconnected amplifier wire across a grounded bare metal surface. You should see a flurry of sparks across your spark gap. If you do, the amplifier and coil are working.

What do you mean a spark gap off the plug wire

Is asking if you see spark output from the coil itself.---Bypassing rotor cap and wires.

??---No , no-----You check for spark coming out of the COIL wire.----That would not be screwed into the cap !----You can make a " hillbilly tool " to check spark.----Glue some wire ( any kind of wire ) to a piece of cardboard with a 1/2 gap between the 6 pieces of wire.-----One end into a plug boot and other end grounded to the block.----

I'm sort of new too outboards, and from what I understand, you want me to test the spark coming from the plug wire on the coil

no ... just stick a screw driver in the boot and hold .5 inch from the block if you do not make a basic tester as explained above.

crank theengine see if spark jumps to the block for .5 inch

That is correct. When I said "rig up" I meant use your imagination. Like any way to hold the threaded end of the wire about 3/8" from ground. Yes the wire you unscrewed from the distributor cap. Maybe even hold it by a piece of tape?

Would I be able to maybe stick a bolt in there and use that to make a gap
Stick a bolt in where? This is the wire you unscrewed from the distributor cap. It has a small threaded brass terminal on the end. Just use that as a spark gap.
