Re: 1970 60 hp

The funny shifting could be a bad push button switch. But it could just be because the motor is running so rotton. There are a lot of reasons it could be running rotton, but I keep preaching this: What kind of spark plugs do you have in there? If it is the originally recommended surface gap plugs, toss them and put in a set of Champion L77JC4 gapped at .040" THEN if it still runs badly, you can go on and check the other stuff. But you are only spinning your wheels trying to make that motor run on surface gaps plugs. Been there--done that--while the motors were still new even.

motor dies, it defaults to forward gear...

Had the motor long? Been running good before this?
Any recent maintenance been done on it?
Fresh fuel?
Fuel line holding pressure?
Age and condition of spark plugs?
Start with compression test and spark test.
