1970 envinrude 9.5 9022c - Changing Water Pump - need directions

I have a 1970 9.5 9022c envinrude. Need to change the water pump, need to know the steps to do so.
How is the Stainless steel plate installed(is it sealed some how to the base?)
Is the housing sealed to the base? what do I use as there is no gasket.
The gear case was already removed when this motor was given to me (free), the water pump was also removed, what does the seal look like where the drive shaft passes through the housing, right now all I have is a rubber washer with a brass ring, but this would stop water from going up the tube(is that normal?)
I have the O ring for the top of the drive shaft.

Any info would be great
