Those are good strong motors. On my 69 115hp there were two wires that go from the power pack under the flywheel to the sensor. The problem was that they got anchored to the timing arm, and with the movement of the arm the insulation on the wires cracked and shorted to the timing arm, killing the spark. I was able to replace the wires all the way to the sensor.

Pretty hard to convert to points. You'll have to get a good manual and start trouble shooting. Once you understand the ignition system it is easy to work on.

If you jumped a wire between 7 & 9 you would eliminate the safety switch, battery charging system, "monkey balls" and ect. Then your only dealing with the ignition system itself. Power pack, coil, trigger, dist cap and rotor. You trouble shoot that system with the jumper wire in place.

check to see if you have volts with the ign. key on. If so, check the output from the pack, then check the ignition coil.
