Im new to this forum so be gentle.... My evinrude idles great, starts fine, and rev's just to the high idle...then dies. You can rev it at the carbs beyond that without it killing but not with the controls. Is there a switch some where thats killing it? Since the it revs beyond the high idle at the carbs I assume it's not a carb issue and believe it to be a switch or wiring issue. Any ideas?
Thanks Charles

I don't know...did you check to see if linkage is working? There is a switch, but it it is a neutral safety switch.

By advancing the RPM at the carb linkage you are bypassing the timing advance, it is moved with the throttle cable. Have someone advance the throttle without the engine running and watch the linkage, you will see the timing advance work. Be careful not to rev it to high in neutral.
I would start with some basic checks, spark and compression, if they are both ok, I would question the carbs.
Has the engine been setting for awhile, old gas maybe.
What shape are the spark plugs in?

Motor sat for several years, Has great spark (new plugs) and good even compression. I know by throttling at the carbs I'm not getting the timing advance but it shows that its cutting the spark out thru the controls or something on the wiring side ( or atleast thats my opinion) I plan on pulling the carbs tonite and checking them out.

underneath the flywheel you will see the timing advance when you throttle up and down. This has a ground wire and a wire leading to the back terminal. With this timing arm moving a lot maybe this is where there is a short of some kind. I have this engine also. Spent quite a bit of time getting to know her the past 3 years. maybe you can post a video so a guy can see/hear what is going on.

If it starts fine and revs fine manually but cuts out when you throttle I would venture to say it has to involve your sensor. sorry to say, but not a cheap part.:(

Now that I think of it I'm sure its a spark issue. I thought at one point that it was starving of fuel so i choked it just as i went to throttle it and it had no effects. Does anyone know what the sensor is for?

The sensor under the flywheel looked good, but the pigtale plugging was corroded so I cleaned that up and tried again. I also had carbs apart and were spotless. It will idle but as soon as you try to throttle it up by the controls it dies. Sounds like spark is killed (like the key is shut off) Most of the electronics has already recently been replaced on the motor.

I hate to post to an old thread but my engine is doing the same thing, did you ever find out what was causing your problem?
