Hey guys,

Make of Motor: Evinrude
Model Year: 1970
Motor model number: 18002E
Motor serial number: E04567
Horsepower: 18hp

I just picked this motor and plan to rebuild her. Everything is intact on her except the previous owner removed the starter bracket, starter, and solenoid off of the motor to put a 25hp motor. The previous owner replaced electric starter bracket with a manual bracket.

I have purchased a factory service manual for the motor and it should be here in a couple of days.

The problem is the manual only has information for a manual starter. I can't find a manual or the break down for the electric starter set up, solenoid, and portion of the carburetor that has the auto choke. If someone has that information or could point me in the right direction I would be thankful.

I don't mind the manual starter for now, but would like to return the motor to electric starter option. I have located a electric starter bracket for this motor and it is on its way. ( I have heard this is hard to find and feel lucky to get for $75 including shipping)

Naturally the motor need a bit of cleaning and cylinder head pressures are 118 and 120 psi. Pretty good.:D Don't worry I will check all the ignition, rebuild the carburetor, change the fuel lines, new plugs, service the water pump and service the gear box.

Thanks for any help that you can lend!!

one thing, the electric start feature was sold as an accessory, which means you will have to find a service manual for the accessories of that year. second thing, the 18 hp family never had recharging capabilities, so the electric start is rather useless

Are you planning on using this motor as a tiller steer or set up for controls?
Also, are you wanting to use a key or just a push button starter switch and manually operate the choke?
If tiller steer, you are in business with a new bracket because the electric starter isn't that hard to find, and as long as it's tiller steer, the electric choke is pointless since the manual choke will be in easy reach. You should be able to find a 12 volt electric starter on ebay and since they're so simple, usually are in functional condition.
You can get a sierra solenoid for less than $20 and build a simple wiring harness yourself very cheaply. You can start that motor probably 100 times or more on a single battery charge if the motor is tuned properly so a single battery charge will usually last all weekend or more. I run my trolling motor off my starter battery on my '57 18hp and if the battery gets low, you can always pull start it. I rarely have to unless I forget to charge my battery.
Once you get your starter bracket and starter, pm me and I'll be more than happy to give you a diagram of how I've got mine set up.
If using controls, you'll want the choke solenoid and little levers and such that go with it and attach to the choke butterfly, too.
I have a wiring diagram on my computer at work but can't get to it until Monday.

Sweet!!

For now I will use the tiller, but I eventually would like to convert it to remote steering. It already has the start button on the port side of the motor. The previous owner removed the electric starter bracket and starter, and solenoid and left the wiring harness. So eventually, within 3months I would like to revert back to the electric starter.

Thanks !!!

Is your wiring harness that was left on the motor for controls with a keyed switch? Did he remove the choke solenoid or starter solenoid or both?

If the harness was for controls, I'd just make a cheapo temporary harness and not alter the one you have now. I believe you could make the harness for about $30.
It's hard to beat an 18 evinrude!!:)

The wiring harness is connected to a black rubber detent boot on the starboard side of the motor just in front of the manual shifter. The previous owner removed the electric starter bracket, electric starter, the choke solenoid and starter solenoid. It looks like the motor was originally purchased with starter option from the factory.

Thanks for your input. Yes I'm rude dude and I have read a lot very good comments and articles about late 1950's to earlier 1970's 18hp motor. When I get her in tip top shape, going to have some fun on the water. Parents and in-laws live in southern Louisiana near Lafayette. I grew up around there and want to leave boat and dependable motor there, so when I go down to visit I can do a bit of fishing in the Basin. Nothing beat Sac-a-lait fishing in the Basin:D.

Thanks jbjennings,
