Is there a thermostat on this motor? Last year I replaced the water pump after the impeller disintegrated and the motor got quite hot. It worked fine in the barrel after I put it together. Didn't try to use it again until now and it won't warm up. After it runs for 10 minutes the cylinders are cold and it runs poorly.

have you replaced the coils at any time?sometimes coils can fail under heat.meaning you can start it ok ,idle ok for awhile then under load and by the simple fact that the coil starts to get warmer it starts to break down.i have the tiller model of that year 33 evinrude and its a great torqie motor.

Thank you for this. I replaced both coils after I discovered that the top cylinder would quit after the motor ran for a few seconds. Now it runs on both and runs warmer too. I guess running on one cylinder it won't produce much heat. Those old coils were marked 1970. I also checked compression, both at 105 lb. Now all I need to do is find a new prop, I'm being told by parts guys around here that they don't make them any more for this motor.

The 33hp OMC motors were an outgrowth/continuation of the "non superquiet" 25/30/35hp motors of the 50s. This is also true of the 60s vintage 28hp motors. None of them had t-stats.

A misfiring cylinder, or one that is not firing at all, will definately make your engine run colder than normal. An excessively rich mixture will do the same thing. Conversely, a lean mixture will make it run hot. Make sure everything is working and adjusted properly for good performance and engine health.

I know that this is an old thread... but can someone tell me the approximate weight of the 1970 33hp (manual start)?

Thanks!

around 100-130. depends on electric or recoil start, and generator.
