Re: 1970 evinrude 40 h.p. single carb question

There's only a few possibilities:
1) Needle and seat leaking. These shut off the flow of gas to the carb when it fills. The needle should look like a perfect taper. They cost about $5.
2) Float has sunk. If it's an old cork float, it could be saturated. Try putting the float in gas and see if it still does. ~$10 for a new one, I think.
3) Float is getting stuck. It may be hitting the side of the carb, or getting hung up on the gasket. Try tapping the side of the carb.
4) Float level is *way* out of adjustment. It should be adjusted so that is level with the carb bowl mating surface when the carb is turned upside down.
Hope this helps!
