1970 Evinrude with the hiccups

I bought a well cared for 1970 Evinrude OB. It ran great last year. It started up on the third pull this year. But at slow speed, it runs smooth, then hesitates, then runs fine again. Even at WOT it runs great, then every once in a while, it will almost quit, then pick back up and run smooth. Does anyone have a remedy? Fuel filter? Spark plugs? Gas and oil are brand new.

Whatever the year, the symptoms are classic of a gummed up carburetor from sitting with gas in it. The skipping or sneezing at idle is for sure a too-lean condition. You might try giving the slow speed needle a tweak toward the left (if it even has one, remember we don't know the hp). But that won't affect the high speed.

You'd think I'd mention the HP......it's a 25.
Do any of you know how to tell the exact year from my numbers?

Could it be a 1980 when I'm thinking it's a 1970?
It makes sense that it is running funny from a gummed up carb, it sat all winter. I just started it up and went this year.
My '64 9.9 has a needle for rich and lean. I have to check this one.
Any suggestions on how to clean the gunk from the carb properly? Gum-out? Or is that a cardinal sin?

OK, openedthe cover and found the knob you were talking about. Now to drag out a garbage can and start it up!

25802 is a 1978 model.

It is a 1978 model. It has a low speed adjustment but a fixed high speed jet. Sounds like it might be time to overhaul carb.
