I have a 1970 model evinrude motor. It is a 75 hp and I have a problem. In neutral it runs fine. rpms go up like they are supposed to. but when I put it in drive and gas it the rpms dont get above 1 and a half.It just dont have any power.

in the water or in the driveway with the garden hose? The typical response to this is carb work. Need to clean the carbs or fuel line leak/clog fuel filter. Next would be the link and sinc/timing check. Then check idle/mixture. If that all checks out move to spark plugs..maybe they are shot...then move to powerpack/ignition coil. Suppose under the flywheel would be next. But my guess is poor fuel delivery. Did I miss anything experts?(there are many on here....i'm not one of them.) But with my 1970 it's important that the carbs are clean and the idle/mixture is set correctly. Otherwise she idles great, but when you try to give a little gas it bogs and shuts down.

don't want to argue with the experts, but my manual indicates the slow speed screws to be 7/8 open. 1 1/2 is way to rich and causes the motor do flood out during throttle. I tried with the 1 1/2 setting and it was a no go. Followed the manual at 7/8 and it ran like a champ.

Is my manual incorrect? I know with these its an adjust as you go until it works process, but 7/8 to 1 1/2 is quite a bit of difference.

Big poppa,
1.5 is more or less a starting point. From there you turn in 1/4 at a time (then wait a few seconds) until it starts to stumble. Then back off about 1/4 turn. Every set up is going to be different based on elevation, and there are probably variations in every carb. Where I live mine usually end up around 7/8 to 1 as well.
The idea is if you start out rich you know you have to turn it in. If you started right at 7/8 you would might be turning in and out for awhile to get it right.
