Hi I have a 1970 johnson 25 short shaft that needs rebuilding. I removed the head and the cylinders are pretty rough so I know it will need boring to clean it up and I havent been able to find pistons so I looked on ebay and found a 1963 28hp powerhead that has good compression and was wondering if this powerhead would bolt on to my 1970 25. If that dont work I have located a 1974 johnson 20hp that is missing the prop and gears in the foot that my motor has so if anyone know if one of these combos will work please let me know. I have read on here that these early 70's Johnsons are pretty tough motors and thats what im needing to power my 1960's 14 foot aluminum v-hull that I converted to a bass boat. Thanks for any help or suggestions!

I don`t know about the 28, but i think up to `76 the 18/20/25 hp are all interchangable. Go to marineengine.com and check for same part #`s on driveshafts ect.

You may find that top quality aftermarket pistons are available. Call 704-839-6548, talk to Ron. He is my aftermarket supplier.

Thanks for the info I will give him a call. I removed the powerhead but have not disassembled it yet. I also removed the waterpump and found no teeth at all so that explains alot since I know nothing about this motor other than my compression reading. Im hoping the rings colapsed and caused the low compression because the cylinder walls are not that bad. Thanks
