Just acquired this outboard motor and had trouble already... seems that the gear for starting is not going into the flywheel to turn and crank the engine. No manual, so I really am at a loss to know the correct position for the controls to be in for starting. I fooled around a little and it seems that there is a plate under the flywheel that only lets the gears engage when not running.<br />Anyway, I cannot seem to do anything to get this plate to move far enough out of the way for engagement of the gear to flywheel. Any suggestions? Where can I purchase a owner's or service manual for the Johnson 1970s 9.5 hp? jbrown@auburncc.org

Re: 1970 Johnson 9.5

are u sure its a 9.5 ? the starter spindle on a 9.5 is fixed and the plastic gear spins up the spindle into the flywheel when u pull the start rope. it will do this no matter weather it is running or not if u pull the rope it will walk the gear into the flywheel (DONT TRY IT WHEN ITS RUNNING). on a 9.5 the plate under the flywheel is where the points and coils are mounted and they only turn to advance timming as u give it more throttle.hope this helps u need to get a manual there are a few on ebay at a good price usually.
