I have a 1970 lamar runabout that I am currently restoring. My $$ is scarce so this will be a slow progress. Here is a pic of the boat when I got it. the floor along with the stringers need to be replaced. I believe the transom needs to be replaced also. I have taken some pics of the work that has been done so far and will be posting them later.

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

This boat was originally abandoned and I had to track down the owner to get the title which he gave to me free of charge. Here are some pics of the boat when I picked it up.

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

Last friday I removed the rest of the deck and started to cut the stringers out. Some of the wood was rotted so badly that it had the consistency of mud. Some of the other stringers were so wet that water came out after I cut them. One qustion that I have is that if I decide to change the stringer layout to give infloor storage will this hurt the structural support for the hull?

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

I have removed the windshield and the rest of the stringers. The next part will be to remove the transom and start getting the floor ready for new fiberglass. I plan on redoing the transom and then putting three layers of the 1708 on the floor before I start doing the stringers.

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

I know that it has been awhile since my last post on this. I dont have much funds or time to work on it, so it is going slow. I have managed to get another boat that was in really bad shape but it had many good items that I was able to salvage from it. For 250 I was able to get a 115hp motor, new windshield, ladder, better trailer and may other items. I have continued to remove all of the wood from the inside of the boat. I have also determined that the transom is shot so I will have to replace that also. As I get more done so that the pictures actually look different then I will post them.

I was looking at using seacast for the transom repair, but afetr getting help from another post I think that I will replace the transom using wood instead.

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

you had mentioned that you had removed the outer skin from the transom.

can you please post pics of that?

lets see where you are......but it looks like the demo is going normal....

as far as structural stability of the hull ....for adding storage......do you mean a ski locker?

first of all.....lets go over a few things.....

you said youd be laying 3 layers of 1708 on the floor before you did the stringers.......i take that to mean you are going to reinforce the hull with more glass before you lay in the strings.....

you dont need to......that is a really solid hull and you will just be adding a lof of weight for nothing........if you grind out the hull and take some layers of glass off inadvertantly....and your worried about it.... one layer of 1708 is wayyyy more than you need.......in fact a double layup of csm would be fine.
(fyi.....3 layers of 1708 is all that is needed for a complete whole hull)

dont forget....that puppie had 5 stringers in it....when you tab the stringers in....you will in fact be adding another layer after overlap.......that will mean your hull is plenty thick....stronger than most production models of today.

as far as storage.......go for it......just build a thin bulkhead fore and aft of the storage area.....(so the skis dont slide inside the hull). and cut a whole in the new deck......

as far as the overall construction......remember the rule of thumb.....replace what was there.....or in other words....duplicate it......so as far as the stringers go..if there was 5 there....replace with 5

now ....having said that......thoes look like really thick dimentional lumber.....dimentional lumber is not as strong as plywood on edge......(the plywood is far stronger) so you can use single peices of 3/4 ply on edge glassed over.....if you want tons of stregnth from the single peice of plywood and ease of wrapping the 1708 over the stringer....there is a diagramme in the hull ext thread about cutting a dowell in half and gluing in to the top of the stringer....and then glassing over it......imho.....that would be an exceptional way to add serious stregnth (like an i beam) to the stringer and also let you wrapp the stringer with ease and little air between the glass and the substraight...... i havent tryed the method yet....but i am convinced it is the way to go for many reasons.
(remember to add three inches to your glass calculations if you use this method)
a new member here says a triax product will make the turn over top of the edge of a regular peice of ply....but it is a special order cloth in most cases and not as readaly avalabel as 1708 plus the added cost.

one thing you want to be aware of....is weight.....if you add too much weight to the boat....you will need a far bigger motor to push it......

that is one of the reasons my boat will need a huge hi horsepower motor cause it will come out at over 3000 lbs when done....double what it was

another thing....if your hull is under 20 feet....uscg says you MUST have floataion foam in it.....weither you add it or not is your choice....

ok......all that should get you back on track
and you have a pm.

read the hull ext thread in reguards to wrapping the stringers....pay special attention to the direction of the cloth...also lunds project in the compleated project forum......we cover a lot of little tricks about the direction of the glass layups there.

now....you said some things about the transom that we need to look at...so post pics when you can and well go over those....

cheers

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

I will get pics of the transom as soon as I can. I hope that way I did it will be okay because I am nervous about getting the glass to look right. I also have several holes, some large and some smaller that I need to fix that the previous owner had put in the boat. I will also need to build up the front of the boat in order to get the new windshield to fit correctly. I wiil try and get pics of this as soon as I can.

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

I have almost completly removed all fo the wood from the transom and I have purchase enough 1/2" pt ply to make three transom sections. The ply is currently drying now. I have planned on placing a layer or glass between 1/2" sections to help give it strength and waterproofing. I know that I am doing my transom differently than most but I was not to uo on the idea of removing the cap. so I cut the outer glass off leaving a 4" edge all the way around, I plan on reattaching the old fiberglass using some 1708 to join both pieces together. Does any one have any concerns in doing it this way? I saw another thread that somebody did it this way and it worked well for him..

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

If the cap is still on and you left a 4 inch lip on the outside of the transom glass, how do you plan to get the new wooden transom in?
will it go in there in sections?
If so I would opt for slooow epoxy to allow plenty of time for fitting and screwing . MAybe 4 hr (on the work, not in the pot).

Where the old wooden transom was you can run a steel brush in a drill to scuff the glass, most likely you can't reach with a grinder.

I'm in the middle of removing a rotted transom now with an elec chainsaw, it works good. I'll seacast it.

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

I havent tried to put in any of the pieces yet but I will more than likely have to section the pieces, but I will be using some epoxy and glass to help secure all of the pieces together. I also used the chainsaw method wich worked great for a while but then I coulndt get the saw to cut any more of the wood out. I had to eventually use a hammer and a chiesel to get the rest out. I considered several options before I resoted to doing it this way, I researched and found several threads on the web where someone has done it this way. One of the post was on the hydrostreams website. http://www.hydrostream.org/ArticleArchives/Transom.htm
I pondered using the seacast to completly redo the transom but I am on a very limited budget (as I only have a little at a time) so I decided to do it this way.

Re: 1970 lamar restoration

I obtained an 18 ft Lamar a couple of years ago. I have gutted it and rebuilt it. Go to my Facebook page and click on my photos and open the Boat album. I am headed to So. Houston today to get the deck repainted since I moved the riser forward. I need something from you - a photo of the Lamar logo on the side of the boat. I will have a graphics company reproduce it in vinyl and put it on the boat. Mine is a 1962 and the glass was perfect. This is a bad-*** boat and I love it.
