1970 Merc 500 - Adding fuel / water separator, does this replace inline fuel filter?

I have a 1970 Merc 500 I've recently had a lot of trouble with due to carbs, water, life etc. I got it running again and I'm thinking about adding a fuel / water separator to the fuel line.

I currently have an inline OEM Mercury fuel filter so I'm wondering does the fuel / water separator replace this or do I keep that too?

Also what brand should I be looking at? I see Mercury has one of there own for around $50.00 dollars that uses Quicksilver filters.

Thanks!

I'd keep the inline filter, too. Different motor, but my Yamaha F150 has an internal inline filter and a separate water separator filter between the tank and the bulb.
