Do any of you folks know about the compatibility of this motor to other mercs? Such as which motors use the same lower end, powerhead, etc. I'd appreciate any info.

The 650 4 cylinder's 2 to 1 lower unit, (of same shaft lengths), will fit all of the inline sixes from the mid 1960s 900, 950, 1000, 1100, 1150, 1250, 1350, 1400, 1500, 90, 115 or 140 to 1987 or 1988. The 1970 650 prolly had a mild steel drive shaft as stock equipment that was difficult in salt water.

Merc went to stainless in the mid 1970s. The LUs on the 3 cylinder 650s likely are different, and the, 800, 850, 80 and 85 had a lower gear ratio but would still bolt up.

Pedo pick ups were added in the late 1970s.

Hope that helps ya. JR

Actually, the info helps a lot. The motor came on a boat I bought to fix up for fishing. I was about to designate it as a parts motor but I think I'll go ahead and bring it back to life.

The powerhead is a b**tard child all to itself and hardly any parts will interchage with it. The gearcases are about the only thing that will interchange and the crank only fits a 650 .

Dang, sure hate to hear that! Oh well, right now the powerhead seems to be fine. Guess i'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
