picked up this little gem with no spark and finally was able to delve into her. Here is what ive found so far. My question is....will i be able to find and replace these wires or make new ones up or splice good wire to replace them onto the existing ends or is patching them the only option. As you can see they are broke in many places. thanks

I've been there done that on my 1969 Merc 7.5 . . . The only difference was that mine had the wiring harness all crumbling and frayed like you show in the pictures. The tricky part may be seeing if you can get back to a good connection or splicing point.

The flywheel probably should come off for better access.

these wires come right from the stator? wondering if the wires can be fed out and a full replacement be done without replacing the stator.

If money is an issue, its probably best to splice the wires at the best part unless the wires are corroded all the way into the stator, as the wires go straight into the stator. Chances are the stator isnt bad, but since the wires go straight into them you better hope the wire at the base is good, otherwise its nearly impossible to splice with little to no wire left

Those early mercs are notorious for that and that is a phasemaker worse yet. Hopefully you get lucky otherwise the stator has to be replaced. Nice thing about the new stator you won't have that problem anymore. Before you do that test the stator make sure it is good.

So....pulled the flywheel and this is what ive found. Also the wires are brittle, hard and ready to break all the way from the stator to the coils. Can someone tell me how to test the stator correctly either off the engine or while still connected to the coils? thanks for all the help so far.

If they are breaking off at the stator it's done. Really no good news there
