So yesterday I decided to venture out to my boat to get started on some prevent maint. and to my discovery after removing the batteris and tighting up the braided hose line for the trim pump (Previous Leak) but now fixed. I found that my distrubtor cap looked as if it was not flush. In fact the one of the screws holding it down was not tighten all the way. So I removed the screws on both ends and lifted cap up. Looked inside and found the contact areas where the rotor spins around to be damaged, excessive burn in areas but uneven. I know its hard without photos. I should have snapped some but forgot. Maybe try friday if that will help for a better understanding.

Next order of buisness is I cleaned up the contacts some and knew I was gonna need to buy a new cap and rotor and might as well replace the points too. I put old cap back on and sit it flush and discovered now that one of the screw holes is partially stripped out. Possible the screws were not the originals and the owner put wrong ones on. I did manage to get cap back on and one screw tighten all the way and the other about half way. Cap appears to be tight but with that being said I wouldn't doubt in my mind that may have been the culprit to my popping/backfire while under load. Did not do it all the time but has been getting slightly worse and I feel that is the issue.

Now with that being said, since those screws tighten down into that metal plate on top of the distributor the only way I will be able to fix it right is buy a new distributor? I may be able to tap it but not sure my skills on that.

If I do have to buy a new one, would you recommend going electronic ign, or stick with the old system since points are cheap fix just can be a pain?

Any links to particular distributors if need replaced?

Was hoping that I would not have to, but even with that being said it might be well worth the investment anyhoo down the road. Thinking EST over Points, and I have read a few threads already about who likes and dislikes either or but I still think better technology is a better way to go. At the same time simple ways of doing things is better. Much like carburetor cars vs. EFI. :) Oh and I do prefer Carbs more!! :))))

Is there a difference between the 2.5 L or 3.0 L? Since mine is 120 HP it is the 2.5L right?

You need the complete kit, not just the distributor.
3.0L Delco Voyager EST Marine Electronic Distributor Kit

2.5 and 3.0L engines use the same distributor.

Your positive that one will fit then? That is a good price and even with shipping its going to be less then what I can buy a regular replacement points distributor. That is the ones I have been finding.

One more thing to get by until I upgrade that distributor can I go down to my local Napa auto parts and pickup a new rotor and cap? If so should I just tell them the motor I have and they should have it or get it for me? Or does this need to be special ordered from Iboats/Marine Store?

I ordered that Delco EST so should be here in a week or so and once it arrives I will let you know how the install goes. Taking boat out tomorrow after the 4th celebrations. Was trying to convince the admiral to take boat out off coast of Huntington Beach to watch Fireworks but she said not this time :(
