Would appreciate help from someone with more outboard experience! I have reviewed past messages of people who have had similar trouble, but I need a little more specific help since I am "mechanically challenged". I dropped the lower unit in my 1970 merc. 650 because I had no reverse only a grinding. I found damage on the cam in the top of the shift shaft. I replaced cam and returned lower unit into place. Now I only have forward and no neutral or reverse. I assume from the other posts I found, that I did not return the shift shaft and/or the cam to the proper position. What is the best way to put it back correctly, or is something else wrong. I do not know the position of the shift/throttle at the time of removal of the lower unit. thanks

I've never done this before either. I just removed the bottom end of an outboard for the first time. Anticipating a disconnect, I moved the gear shift all the way to reverse before doing anything. And I'll try not to rotate the gear shift shaft.

I imagine, that if it's not in the same posit. when you put it back, then it's an "iterative" sequence to get it back. Put it back together temp. I would shift as far in the reverse direction as I could. Drop the bottom again and move the lever to neutral. Put it back together and see how far it will go. Enventually the two will be in synch.

Or maybe you can leave the lever in reverse and with the bottom separated, turn the gear shift shaft all the way to reverse (if you know which way is which?) Then mate the top and bottom again.

Like I say - I never did it yet either. But I did read hear somewhere that it can take some trial and error.

MiYotie.

revcu: please don't double post...its confusing and considered rude. check your other post
miyotie: have no idea if I can offer any help unless you tell us what motor/year/model. without that its all speculation.

i had the same exact problem 63 65hp u have to take thalifter cam off the top and move the spline shaft with a pair of pliers watch which way is neutral, rev is just a little further then watch your lever and remember which way they both turn then return the spline shaft just b4 reverse and your lever toward front of engine then put back together you might have to try it a few times but it will just make u more familiar with it GOOD LUCK
