Re: 1970 sears 5 hp shuts off after warm up
i was wondering if the water pump would be the problum even if it only cools the shaft would it cool the motor as well
your misinformed as to the water pump only cooling the shaft, think of it as a heat sink for the whole air cooled engine....its the combination of air and water that cool this engine, the water through the adapter plates under the actual engine, newer model AV 817s had a casted in water jacket beneath the lower half of the cylinder, yours does not but works as I have stated and is critical to the life of your lower crank bearing and seal, also water is circulated around the exhaust port via the base plate helping to cool the exhaust ports and prevent piston scuffing.
wont run after it warms up
Your problem could be several things from bad fuel pump bladder and or stoped up fuel vent, plugged up jets or fillter screen to leaking crank seals. If its been abused and run with out the benefit of water circulation I would bet the lower seal is leaking for sure
