your lucky it broke in gear and most do, if you go shopping for a replacment be sure to measure what you have...they came in sevral lengths

Thanks. I've half looked for a replacement but probably won't bother. I was hoping there was a way to take this thing apart?

nope, there pressed together...you can find a used one or I can look around for you if you need some help, expect to pay as much a $50

Thanks for the help, I think I'll stick to the direct drive for now. When in neutral, can you spin the prop freely when these are properly working?

yep you can spin it, to much nuetral idling and rust is what kills them, as you have found out they lock directly when in gear, and spin internally when in nuetral
