Sorry I don't have the exact year of the motor. I will try to get that.

I bought a 15'Glastron and this outboard for $500. We probably should have had a mechanic look at it to make sure it was OK, but we didn't.

We ran it all day, some low rpms some high. Towards the end of the day the motor stopped running. On the outboard, under the hood, there is a lever that can be set to "Automatic", "Choke Off" and "Choke on". When the motor died it was on the "Automatic position" I switched it to the "Choke off" position and the thing fired right up and we made it back to the marina. Wheew!! Is this a sign of major trouble?

Re: 1970 Something 70HP EVINRUDE Problem

Hey Tim, No need to worry about what happened. I had a 1962 75hp Johnson. It had the same options for the choke. The person who sold it to me, said to use the choke a certain way, and the first time I went out on the water, I could not get it started. I called a friend and he came and met me. We played with the choke, using the automatic, then choke "on" and choke "off". It just took some figuring it out until I got the hang of how to start it.
You are just going to have to play a bit with it. Try what I did. Put is on choke "on", turn the key for about 3-5 seconds, then choke off and turn the key for 3-5 seconds. If it has not started yet, turn choke on and it should start right up. Oh yeah, make sure the throttle is on start position, or high revs and it should start no problem.
Happy boating :D
