Hello everyone, new on this forum. I know most everyone here is partial to the aluminum Starcrafts but maybe I can get some answers anyway. I just picked up a fiberglass model for free. All I am able to find out is the year...1970. It is just under 17". Can anyone tell me what model it is? Is it a good boat to rebuild. Seems like a good factory build and we like the boat so I think I wanna fix er up. Thanks

Welcome to StarcraftLand,, even with a glasser, Ron. We forgive you. :)

Check the brochures for 1970 - 1970 - a set on Flickr. She might be a V-160 on page 6.

If the stringers and transom are good, then yes it is a good boat to fix up.

If they are rotten, then you have to decide if you want to invest a couple thousand $$ and a few hundred hours of your time.

On a 1970, not a chance. But I can't bring myself to trash it. Plus, my wife is nervous in a smaller boat so she REALLY likes the tall sides. Need I say more?

Sounds like you are in for the long haul!

Head over to the Boat Restoration forum and start reading through the fiberglass rebuild threads. Awesome information over there!

Have fun:thumb:

Re: 1970 Starcraft

I've already rebuilt floors and transoms on a couple other runabouts. It doesn't scare me I just don't care a lot for it. Love the feeling when it's done but DANG it takes a lot of patience. I suppose if this one turns out as nice as the others I had better hang onto it. I like this boat better than any other I've ever had so I'll take the time and do it up nice. Then keep it and run the wheels off of it for 10 or 15 years. I do have the dreaded Multiple Boat Syndrome though. And I hate to turn away a stray.............outboard. I like to pick em up dirt cheap as donors, then get it running again. Then I don't wanna get rid of it so I have to find a boat for it ya know. Use it for awhile til my wife says we have too many. So I have to thin the herd and start all over again. If only they had never invented water, we wouldn't even know what a boat was.

Is there a StarCraft forum dedicated to glassers just as this one is to tinnies?

Nope not really. This forum is totally dedicated to all things Starcraft, glass and alum alike!

Though, I'm not naming anyone here, there are a bunch of guys who really get into trashing really beautiful vintage fiberglass boats:noidea:

Re: 1970 Starcraft

Thanks GA, I've been warned. I think I'll bite the bullet and really do this thing right, hopefully for the last time ever (yeah right). I might have to re-power before long. My old evinrude 50 is a lil low on one cylinder. Poured seafoam in it hoping for just a stuck ring put haven't checked again yet. I sure hope it works cause it pushes this boat surprisingly well for just a 50, even with a weak cylinder. Jasoutside might have to fight my wife for the boat but he might be far enough away to not worry about. Thanks for the welcome and if anyone is interested I will start a thread just for this resto.

Good to know. I can be a little OCD about details and I'm not bad at glassin...Maybe this boat can sway you just a little when it's done.

Let me throw this out there...This 50 horse (74 evinrude) has a 13 7/8 x 17 prop. Any thoughts there? I know there is a forum for this but was already here so thought I'd ask. It planes but not getting WOT

If it's not pulling WOT and one weak cylinder, don't jump on the prop just yet. Might be worth a trip over to the J/E forums and look around or post.

WARNING - If a guy in full HazMat gear shows up on your doorstep armed only with a chainsaw, sawzall and an ax - sic the Admiral on him.

I hope you've figured out we offer a little bit of good advise in between the clowning. :)

Yeah, I enjoy the clownin around. Seriously tho, this thing runs awfully good I'm hopin it's just a stuck ring. I suppose I need to wait til I check compression again. I'm gonna let the seafoam soak a while first tho

Re: 1970 Starcraft

One thing you can do is turn the motor until the weak one is close to TDC and squirt some Seafoam in the plug hole, put the plug in and let it sit for a day or two. More concentrated that way. And won't hurt anything.

That's exactly what I've done. Put a new coil on it today and had it running. Smoked like heck so the seafoam must be doing something. Gonna put more seafoam in and let sit while I go thru carbs again. Rebuilt them already, went thru them again and found more trash. Runs rough so I'm gonna go thru once again just to be sure.

I guessed you just put the SF in the gas tank. Do you have a fuel filter?
