At my cottage my neighbours asked me to see if I could fix there 5hp evinrude for them. I don't know the year of it but its from the 70's or 80's. The engine is hasn't run in two years they said they took it to the marina on our lake and they got it running and when they left it for the winter it never ran again. I don't know a thing about evinrude engines (I have only worked on Forces) but I would like to help them. I think I will replace the fuel lines, add fuel filter, replace spark plugs, clean spark plug heads, check fuel pump rubber, and clean carb. My question is sense know nothing about these engines is what else should be looked at / replaced and if you have any tips. Also what spark plugs should the engine be running on so I can buy the right ones. Thanks!

Do you have a model#? You could have a 6hp from the 70's, or a much newer 5 hp 4 stroke.....or ???

they did make a 5hp in the mid to late 60s. and again in the 90s. but i think the later ones where 4 strokes as stated already. if it is one of the earlier ones they use champion J4C spark plugs.

They did build / market a 5 hp in the mid and late 60's---No gear shift but same powerhead as the 6 hp model.-----First thing I would check is the spark quality.----Spark must jump a gap of 1/4" or more.---If it does not do that the magneto needs attention.
