1971 100HP Water Pump Question

I'm in a seriously limited cash situation and I think I need to rebuild my water pump. I just got a 1971 Starcraft Holiday with the Johnson Hydro-Electric attached to it. I don't think regular or proper maintenance was done to it and from reading the "Awakening your motor" post I'm sure the water pump needs attention.

Do I really need to replace the plate and housing if they seem undamaged? Can I just replace the impeller. Seems that if I'm going to spend a couple hundred in parts to do this every year, a newer motor would be in order. Something I do not have the money for.

Thanks

You can replace just the impeller if the housing and plate are in good shape.

BOAT=Bring Out Another Thousand ;)

As stated, if the housing and plate are in good condition, they do not necessarily HAVE to be replaced, but there is more in the water pump kit than just the plate, housing and impeller. There are o rings and the like that you will want to change while the lu is down. The water pump does not need to be done every year as well, if you do the complete kit you are good for a few years unless you run into some type of failure or you suck up a foreign object which damages the water pump.

The kit should be about 80 bucks, whoever is charging you 200 is being a bit greedy.

Just be very careful when you are dealing with the wires that lead to the lower unit. You can do the impellar only BUT if you see more damage.....bite the bullet and do it all.

Re: 1971 100HP Water Pump Question

I appreciate the answers.

Should this motor spit water using a flush adapter or does it need to be submerged?

Thanks Again.

You woun't see much water coming out of the exhaust ports running on muffs.
Most of the water will come out the exhaust in the center of prop.
