Want reverse so I'm gonna tackle putting in new shift cam, cam follower, clutch and reverse gear to avoid the lottery of used lower units. Plus finding one with a 1.78 gear ratio might be tough and then I have to get into propping. I've read the manual and posts in the forum and it seems pretty straight forward.

But...I was wondering if I can remove the shift cam without removing the forward gear and pinion gear/drive shaft? Thanks.

Unfortuneately the forward gear is captive by the pinion gear and you do have to remove the forward gear to get at the shift cam.

I changed the shift cam on a 77 model 850, if its anything like that you dont have to pull the fwd gear, here is what you will probably discover once you have it apart only yours will probably have straight teeth. Make sure cam has the correct side up.
