I have a 1971 evinrude 125HP. I am not getting spark on any of cylinders, there is only 1 coil that one lead of the pulse pack ties into, I am not getting anything from the coil which ties into the stator assembly. I swapped out coild with a nown good one and still nothing coming out from the coil. The manual I have dose not get into to much detail about the pulse pack. Is there a way to test this thing? I do not want to run out and sped 300+ on a new one if this is not the cause. This motor dose not have much for electronics on it so I am assuming that it is a faulty pulse pack. Dose anyone know of a way to test this thing or have any idease on what wlse would not cause spark? Thank you for all of your help on this.

Re: 1971 125 Rude, pulse pack test?

1. With key turned on, check the voltage at the purple wire going to the pulse pack. Should be battery voltage (12V). If ok, you know everything up to that point is OK. That leaves pulse pack, coil, sensor, and distributor as possible culprits.

2. Dis-mount the coil and unscrew it and the wire from the distributor cap and remount coil. Rig up a 3/8" spark gap off the end of the coil wire. With key turned on, unplug and re-plug the wire connector between the pulse pack and didtributor/timer base. There should be a spark each time you unplug the connector. If there is, the pulse pack and coil are OK and the culprit is the sensor or distributor. However, if there is no spark each time you unplug the connector, the culprit is the pulse pack or coil.

3. The book says to check the current draw of the pulse pack with a low reading ammeter. There should be a minimum current draw, but less than 0.7 amps. If zero or more than 0.7, pulse pack is bad.

4. If you've gotten this far and narrowed it down to pulse pack or coil, it isn't a bad idea to replace both anyway.

i have an extra one(actually 2, but keep one for spare) that I'll sell you substantially less than a new one.
