Hi All,

I recently purchased a Jon Boat that included a 1971 Evinrude FastWin 25HP outboard. I have no experience with outboards, so to begin I was hoping to get some information on the motor. First off, the serial number is: 25102S-E07940. The information provided by the seller was that it ran about a year and a half ago, but had trouble idling. He did say that he had the foot rebuilt, and when he gave up, he took precautions for storage. It looks like everything is present, and in pretty good shape. I haven't even tried doing anything to it yet, I was hoping to get some information here as to what I should do before attempting to start it. Now for my questions :).

Is this considered the "Sportster" Model? All 25 HP in this year I have found have had this title.
Is this motor a two stroke or four stroke? There is an electric start button that has one wire running up under the flywheel, and another that runs somewhere below the motor. Did these motors come with electric start stock? I don't see a starter anywhere, but would it be located under the flywheel? Do I need a pressurized gas tank for this? If indeed it is a four stroke, where is the oil check?

Really any info would be great, I am quite the "Newbie" with outboards, and have found limited info on this motor. Thanks in advance!

The engine is a 1971 25hp Johnson. The push button is no doubt a kill switch used to stop the engine.

It is a 2 stroke engine, using the 50/1 mixture.... one pint of TCW-III 50/1 oil to 6 gallons of gasoline. A octane rating of 87 will be fine.

The carburetor will need removing, cleaning, and rebuilding, using a complete carburetor kit. The kit is available at any dealership, NAPA, Sierra, etc.

The lower unit requires what is called HiVis 80/90w gearcase oil, available at Wal*Mart, K-Mart, your local dealership, etc. Fill from the bottom large slotted screw hole until it flows out the idential top screw hole.

DO NOT remove the philips screw that you might find in the lower unit skeg . That is a long shoulder type piviot pin for the internal shift lever.

Thanks for the quick reply, This is such a wonderful forum.

That's great advice, I kind of figured i should start with the carb. Do I need a pressurized gas tank? I found a parts diagram that listed quite a bit of parts to the tank online, so I am assuming I can't use one of the inexpensive wal-mart types.

Thanks again, all info appreciated

The engine has a fuel pump. You DO NOT use a p[ressurized tank. The ones at Wal*Mart will do just fine.
