Hi....

I found Leroy's Ramblings on my motor...but not a heck of a lot else.....and I've been searching around a bit :)

http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/mercury_4.5.htm

Hie motor is a bit newer than mine (mine is a 1971).....but he talks about everything except what I need to know: How to test the ignition system. I do not have spark...and I need to determine what is at fault.

Parts sure are expensive for these; eh? Not like reviving an OMC magneto system...that's for sure.

Any help would be appreciated. Serial # 3030032

Thanks, Chuck

Mercury used that type ll ignition on 4hp from 70 on so what Leroy has written on 4.5s will apply to yours.
Here's a few links that might help you out. Phasemaker ll ignition, high and low speed coil. Don't get excited if the points look burnt on phasemakers. They fire on the make unlike Phelon ignitions. You can get these motors in tune to where you can spin the flywheel with yor hand to start em'.

Thanks River Boy....

Today I pulled the flywheel to have a look...and I also got ahold of the correct Seloc manual. It appears that there were two or maybe even three different versions of the ignition systems used on the single cylinder Mercs of that vintage.

My stator does not look like the one referenced in that CDI PDF that you list above. I wish it did; it's a lot cheaper :)

According to Seloc; mine uses type II "without an electrical module". There is another version of Type II that does use "an electrical module"...and that one (not mine) looks like the CDI PDF.

I've included a couple of pictures. Seloc gives an outline of basic electrical testing...but I'm asking for any suggestions anyway because if I have to end up replacing the stator...I might as well part the engine out; they are $400.

Does anyone know if the newer stator "with an electrical module" can be substituted for mine? It's way cheaper....

Thanks, I'm learning a lot here....that's always good.

Chuck

From the looks of the wires, and stator, in the photos you could be looking at more $ to fix than it is worth. The stator and wires can be found and replaced. Just did a 9.9 this past winter with the same setup and cost close to 400.00 for the parts needed alone. The wire insulation from the points to the coil will break down under the stator plate and fire to ground causing the motor not to run.
Best of Luck on your choices.

That's why I'm trying to find an affordable alternative. Just a year or so prior to mine they were using Magneto ignitions on them. I wonder if I had a donor motor like that....could I switch the entire system over?

Does anyone know how I can find that out?
