my 65 hp engine took it out today for the first time since i bought it . Then i notice it was not peeing thought what the  since before i took it out i put a new impeller and seals tank tested it work fine in the garage (like they always do) So i took the lower unit up rig my garden hose up to shoot water through the motor using a jerry rig adapter still not peeing and yes i check for blockage and i evan squrrited the water back through the pee comes out but just won't pee. so i put it all back together and the motor is still getting to hot just don't want to ruin it has 135 psi on all cylinders any thoughts? and on side note yes i installed the impeeler turning the right way made sure before i slap it back together , this is not my first ob

My gut feeling is the key fell out and the impeller is spinning free.

O.k. My next guess would be the wear plates on the pump housing were no good. THese engines did not have t-stats, so the culprits are pretty much limited. If you have cleared any obstruction from the lines (which you said you have done, then it's pretty much an issue of whether or not the impeller is pumping water or not.

well i would say that would be the case but i have the pick up tube attach for the garden hose with the lower unit off it is getting all the pressure from the hose it should be going through the motor and out the pee hole i just don't want to tear the drive shaft housing off to see if something is wrong with the water inlet below the power head not like you can see if the water is coming out from a crack in it with it on just more fun for me i guess the lower unit in my mind has been ruled out at this point

Wait, let's back up. When you took it out and you said it wouldn't pee, how long did you run it, and at what RPM's?

Re: 1971 650 water not pumping

O.K. All I was going to say is that my old motor (I have a '73 500) takes well over a minute to get water out the telltale after it's been sitting and dried out. And the first time I started it after doing the impeller this last time, I was worried I had done somnething wrong too, it idled for well over a minute and no water, so I did what you aren't supposed to do on muffs, and raced it up to like 3K RPMs and boom, water shot out, then when I went back to below 1000, it kept a steady stream.

Did you have the cowl off? If the cowl is off, you can lat your hand on hte side of the water jacket and feel if there is water circulating through there.

Sounds like the water tube was misaligned and fell out. Unfortunately it looks like you may have to pull the LU again. Let us know what you find.
