Been a LONG time since I came here because after I repaired a few motors they served perfectly for years. Must have gotten good advise.

Finally due for a tuneup, bought sparkplugs for the motor and flipping through the manual it says to loosen two screws under the armature plate and adjust till it contacts the roller. I am sure it is listed in more detail somewhere in the manual but I have not found it yet.

Maybe it has just been too long since I had this thing apart but is that something I have to pull the flywheel for?
OR is it just adjusting for wear on the throttle cam follower, that looks to need adjusting?

With the state of the economy and reduced hours at work I have a whole lot more fishing time on my hands this year, and with this little 6hp motor it is dirt cheap to go fishing compared to what my other hobby costs.

I am sure what I need is in the manual just having a hard timing finding it.
Thanks for the help guys.

It's called a link and sync and no need to remove the flywheel to set it. You can loosen the plate with a flat screw driver (90 degree type) and make the adjustment. If your doing a tune up though you might want to pull the flywheel and have a careful look at the condition of your points and clean and re-gap them if they are good. Gear oil, impeller also come to mind. With any luck at all we should be able to run your costs up as high as your other hobby. Best of luck.. Rick.

If you are really going to do a tuneup, you need to do more than sync the carb to the armature cam. The points need to be checked and possibly replaced. In either case, the point gap should be checked or adjusted and the flywheel has to be removed to do that. Be sure to use a harmonic puller, with the right grade and size bolts.

You can probably get a manual for that motor right here at iboats. If not they are available from a number of online sources. EBay usually has a vendor or two seeling them too. For parts info, go to www.shop.evinrude.com.

Re: 1971 6hp Johnson tuneup

Thank you.
Honestly I don't think I have put but maybe 20 hours on this engine in the last few years since I replaced the entire ignition system and WP. I will see if I can find the time to check the points this week though.
I did the gear lube right after posting, it seems to have a slight seal leak at the prop so it gets some water in it, easy fix for now is several changes a summer. When I looked into it it seemed like that seal was a bear to change.

I have the manual, just seem to have a hard time finding the info I want in it.

I tend to fish SMALL water so I have fewer pleasure boaters to put up with the engine does not see much run time. Think the only reasons it needed plugs was I idled around a whole lake last week just to get a better idea of shore structure and like I said most time I don't run it enough to really warm up, very short trips.

Far as making this as expensive as my other hobby, doubtful.

6hp might not be the fastest boat on the water but I do have the fastest tow rig at the launch.
