Welcome aboard Birddog.

You might have better luck posting your engine questions in the Evinrude section of the forum.

Having said that, my Dad had a motor similar to yours when I was a kid. It did the same thing you describe. After a few years of different mechanics, a seal in the connector to the engine was discovered to be leaking. You may want to check your fuel line for leaks and that the seals are good. You said you just replaced it, but its still possible.

This leads me to believe you think your motor is a 4 stroke... It IS a 2 stroke and if you are running it without mixing oil in the gas you have already done major damage to it.

It is also definitely older than a 71'. When you post in the engine forum I would probably post the model along with it so you know what you actually have.

If it hasn't been run in awhile the carberator is probably full of varnish and need to be rebuilt and cleaned out.

The push/pull style cables are all pretty much the same as far as connecting to the engine, the outer jacket of the cable connects with a nut onto the end of the tube bracketed to your transom. The nut size and thread are all the same. The connection behind the dash between the cable and the steering mechanism is proprietary depending on the manufacturer of the steering system, and I believe most of the older units did not come apart and based upon the age of your boat you will want to replace both anyway. To remove the cable at the engine end, you will want to remove the bolt at then engine, unscrew the nut on the end of the and then open the clamp holding the tube (at the tube end). This will allow you to pull the tube off of the end of the cable rather than sliding the cable to starboard where it will hit the hull and you run out of room to slide it out. The steering units are sold on iboats and the manufacture's site can help you select the appropriate model generally based upon how much room you have behind the dash (rack or rotary) and the size of the outboard dictating the need for a no-feedback system which I would recommend.
