1971 Bayliner Saratoga questions

I'm looking at a 1971 23' (he says 23' but I don't think they made a 23') Bayliner Saratoga... I know, I know, that's an old fish, but she's in very good shape and the price is good.

I have never owned a Bayliner, much less an old girl like this. She's got a rebuilt (in 2000), Straight 6, new outdrive (last year),new canvas, etc...

Can anyone tell me anything about these older Bayliners? Pros, cons? Also, assuming it's in excellent condition inside and out what would be a decent (as in it's worth considering buying it for that) price?

Gotta' be some problems somewhere. I don't care what brand it is - that's a lot of water under the hull.
The price could be anywhere from $100.00 to $1,000.000.00 - depends on how bad you want it. Better have some deep pockets and plenty of boating knowledge to get into something that old.
Just guessing that the engine is the 250 Chevy ( 215 hp ) with the VP outdrive. If nothing else the engines are pretty easy to replace / rebuild but the leg scares me a bit. Don't know that much about them but those earlier VP parts are getting scarce and pretty expensive. If you're on that " I've just gotta' have this boat" thing then quite possibly contact a marine surveyor in your area. Thinking the cost should be around $300.00 to $400.00 for their services. Kinda' cheap insurance against the price of the boat and any possible future problems. At least you'll know the condition of the boat from a professional view.
