hey guys....admitted newb to owning a boat. and also pretty mechanically inclined..my lower unit was bad when i bought the boat so i bought a used one..the used unit works fine (shifting & spinning)..it passed the pressure test and all...i reinstalled the lower unit which was really easy as i went through it like i did when i took the old one off... i got everything back together and went to the river to test my new boat out....all went fine til i throttled up...it ran fine then jumped out and back into gear...almost sounded like the gears were grinding...i immediately put the boat back on the trailer and tried to adjust the shift rod......? still happening though....any ideas?

Did you adjust the shift rod longer? Down is forward so a longer rod biases toward forward. If that didn't help, then---Bad news: Drive dogs are worn. You need to disassemble the lower unit and grind the dog faces on the clutch and on the gears square again. It may help to reverse the dog clutch as reverse gets much less wear than forward, but depending upon the wear of the forward gear, it may not help.
