I have recently purchased this '71 evinrude 50 model 50173s. It was not running when I got it because the throttle cable was broken and the ignition switch was jamming. I have fixed that. The engine starts easily and ran well when I took it for a slow cruise around the bay, but stalled every time I would take it down to the lowest throttle position. Before putting it in the water I found it idled best on muffs with mixture screws set to about 1/2 turn out. The new plugs were wet but not carboned black when I got back to dock. This motor does not appear to have a throttle stop screw that would allow me to set the idle higher. Carbs were clean as a whistle when I tore them down to inspected them.

Question is, how are you supposed to adjust the idle SPEED on this motor?

as you face the front of the motor (looking at the carbs) on the left hand side just below the flywheel there is the idle adjust screw. turning it clockwise will increase idle rpm's. you may have to readjust the mixture screw a little now that you have it in the water. on the muffs there is no back pressure which changes things a little.
