So got her up and running started right up on the first turn, but dropped her in the water and she just never gets up to full speed. I know the mix is right on, I even filled up the spare tank to make sure, now here is the golden ticket, if I have the throttled pegged and pull up on the manual choke the engine kicks up a little then I release the choke and she starts to move at what I remember is full speed for about 5 - 10 seconds, then back down. It still moves well at full throttle but I can just tell this engine has more to give me, I did hit it with OMC engine tuner this spring and clean out the carbs, but she still never got to full speed. One final note the second day she was in the water, she stalled after running for about 3 minutes and wouldn't restart, I pulled the plugs the were real dark and oily, cleaned them off with a wire brush and she started right back up.

Any ideas?

Tommy

Tommy,

When you say "cleaned" the carbs. Did you disassemble, soak, clean and install new kits?

If not, that's where your problem may be.

whenever I here the word dissamble I begin to shake....no all I did was hit it with a can of OMC Engine Tuner, which entailed heating the engine up, then spraying each carb full of the cleaner and then letting the engine sit for 4 hours like the can said. Tell me more about cleaning the carbs, does it real clean them out? Any idea why the engine revs up when the manual choke is pulled and released?

Get the carb kit(s) for the carbs and a manual for the engine and disassemble and clean them properly. That will probably solve the problem. I always forget to get the bad gas out of my engine before the winter so I go through this problem every spring. Carbs are gummed up and cleaning them fixes the prob.

Hi, Tommy.

There are several very small passages and orifices (jets) in outboard carbs to control fuel flow into the airstream through the carb.

It is nearly impossible to clean these of varnish and gum without soaking the thing in carb cleaner solvent, then blowing them out with air.

Your symptoms suggest that your engine is running too lean at WOT. If this isn't corrected you are going to "lose" a cylinder or two. It is almost certain to be caused by partially clogged jets in one or two carbs.

That is why DJ asked about disassembly. It is a lot less intimidating if you have a Manual, but it needs to be done.

You can buy a manual and 3 carb overhaul kits for what a shop would charge to do one carb, or less. And then you still have the manual.

Good luck. :)
